Analytical AI can be great -- it can look at millions of mammograms and track cancer in a patient over time and pull from that what common precursors for breast cancer are, but that's not generative.So what is Generative AI?
Generative AI takes already existing knowledge (including from other Generative AI models, which is another issue) and creates a 'new' thing: art, writing, videos, even making people say things they never did.Let's put aside that Gen AI never truly creates, just copies and combines, and talk about the water usage.Data Centers are how Gen AI functions, and requires massive amounts of water to do so. In areas where Data Centers are built, the surrounding city, town, wildlife will all be without clean drinking water because of it. Data Centers are being built, and proposed, across North America leading to protests."but we've had Data Centers for a while now, for the internet itself."While this is true, those Centers run on far less energy requirements as well as far less space requirements. This is why we haven't seen the vast devastation from them as we have seen from the new larger scale Data Centers, who's only role is to keep Gen AI active.The above quote is used by many politicians and law makers to make these Data Centers seem like less of a big deal.Gen AI has also been proven to lead to something called AI Psychosis, and decreased intelligence; including poor problem solving, and decreased language skills.
When Gen AI learns from itself, facts become blurry at best and completely untrue at worst. One machine takes misinformation from the internet, and claims it to be true. Another machine see's this as fact, and repeats; sometimes adding more. Misinformation is then repeated over and over until it becomes 'common knowledge'. This make it more and more difficult for anyone to find accurate information on any given topic. Possibly even spreading false information themselves by not realizing their source was Gen AI.
Overall, Gen AI feels easy. Because the people in power want it to be. It lines their pockets at the expense of you and others.
Use your voice to educate others in your life about Gen AI, and stand up against Data Centers in your backyard.
